Why should I learn about birth beforehand?
A little bit of fear about labor and birth can be a good thing! It's a great motivator for finding out what's really true about birth and how you can prepare for it with confidence.
I encourage doula clients prenatally to gain a working knowledge of birth, both the natural process, and the various types of medical management. You can do this by taking classes in person or online and reading on your own. Equally important is learning and practicing coping skills that appeal to you. Comprehensive classes may also include communicating with caregivers, postpartum concerns, and the basics of infant care, feeding, and safety.
